SYNOPSIS:
An intimate portrait of 3 people looking for solutions to restore and sustain America's small farmers, focused around an activist African American farmer in Mississippi.
There are a lot of reasons in this film to show why Ben Burkett’s Mississippi farm and the Co-Op that grew from the Civil Rights Movement 40 years ago that he helps guide, should sustain. Family; community; connection with mentoring and schools; wholesome organic foods; and stewardship of land in the face of being a front line warrior in the era of climate change come to mind. Revolutionary solution seekers (Solutionaries) have ideas to help him. Famed chef Alice Waters, the visionary who is responsible for the farm to table movement in America and the Edible Schoolyard model, suggests to Ben that the power of the school purse, while making lunch a wholesome lesson for the next generation, could help ensure his sustainability. Former Slow Food America executive and founder of the Crescent City Farmer’s Market in New Orleans, Richard McCarthy, takes that cue, and explores with Ben if shaking up the system with ideas from the past might provide a win-win future. What does Ben think of an injection of capital, technology, policy cooperation, and a commitment of the capital of the school lunch as a solution? Indeed, these are the the principles of the Marshall Plan that successfully rebuilt Europe after World War II and brought America prosperity in the bargain. What does he see are the pitfalls and possibilities for growth for farmers, children, and rural America? Ben provides an intimate portrayal of why small farming is worth saving.
